PHILIPPINES
(A study of the country and its people through the eyes of a non-Filipino) by Bob Boyer, Professor of English, St. Herbert College, DePere, WI
Title: Navy hero dies at 85, helped supply Filipino Guerrillas 1943-1944 by submarine

Captain William R. Anderson, USN (ret.) died on February 25 of this year. The item that initially caught my attention in his obituary in the "New York Times" is the following line: "On one of his missions during World War II, his submarine brought supplies to guerillas fighting the Japanese in the Philippines." My definition of hero has changed over the years; I like to think it has become more demanding. By the time I finished reading his obituary, I knew William R. Anderson embodied my definition of hero---and probably everyone else's. He participated in eleven submarine missions in the Pacific during World War II, for which he received several decorations. After the war he rose to the rank of Captain and in 1957 became the second Commander of the first U.S. nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. Under his command, the Nautilus made the historic journey under the Arctic ice cap, passing directly under the North Pole at 11:15 p.m. (EDT), August 3, 1958. This voyage also marked the first time anyone had sailed from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the North Pole. Commander Anderson and his crew received numerous commendations from the U.S. government. He also received recognition as an explorer from scientific organizations, including the Royal Geographic Society of Great Britain, the Geographic Society of Philadelphia, and the American Geographical Society. His accomplishments rival those of Admiral Byrd and Charles Lindberg. The naval hero, now also an explorer of note, retired from the navy. He ran for election as a Congressman from Tennessee and won as a moderate democrat. He was very popular, winning in one case with about eighty percent of the vote. Military hero, explorer, popular politician. The stage was set for his perhaps his most heroic stand. In 1970, as the number of casualties from his district in Tennessee rose during the Vietnam War, Anderson began to question the war. He traveled to Vietnam that year and returned still more skeptical. Later that same year, Anderson read about J. Edgar Hoover's attacks on the two anti-war priests, Daniel and Philip Berrigan. Hoover made accusations that Anderson believed were unfounded. In a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, Anderson rebutted Hoover's insinuations: "Mr. Hoover has resorted to tactics reminiscent of McCarthyism, using newspaper headlines and scare dynamics, rather than the due process of law." ("New York Times Obituaries," Tuesday March 6, 2007). Rep. Anderson lost much of his political popularity and became a target of the Nixon administration. Three years after his disagreement with Hoover, Anderson narrowly lost his seat in the House. Perhaps the obituary in the "New York Times," instead of reading "William Anderson, Navy Hero," should simply have read "William Anderson, Hero." As I finished reading the obituary, part of my mind kept returning to the sentence about Anderson's supply mission to the guerrillas in the Philippines during World War II. I wanted to know more. I had a number of questions. Where did he surface in the Philippines? What supplies did he bring? And, of course, I wanted to know who were his Filipino contacts. I did some research and came up with some answers that shed light on the connection between submarine warfare and guerrilla warfare in the Philippines, as well as further light on the naval hero, William R. Anderson. I look forward to sharing this material with you next month. Every day more World War II veterans, both U.S. and Filipino, are dying. Their stories need to be remembered. I welcome your comments or questions at Robert.boyer@snc.edu.

RANDOM LINES

Title: Ador, if it's you that they adore

It may not be because of your age, but maybe it’s for the 31 years of service and unselfish dedication to nursing. Ador Datu celebrated her retirement in two occasions in March. She was feted at work with a small party attended mostly by the staff in her floor at the St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago. Then she had a much bigger celebration at the Holiday Inn in Skokie shortly after that. Ador surprised everybody with her vocal rendition of, “It’s the wonder, the wonder of you.” In the pictures below, she is seen with husband Vic after they did a special dance; with a few of her guests. We also found out at the party that close friends and relatives call her Doring. I guess we can also call her Adora, huh? GOOD PARENTS CAN BE BETTER GRANDPARENTS Most of the grand parents I know agree that they are better as grand parents than they were as parents. Well, we learn, don’t we? We know the things that we should have done and the things we should not have done as parents. And now, as grand parents, we want to compensate. Only trouble is we sometimes overcompensate, and our grand children often get away with things that our children would have been punished for. Our grand children can ask for anything and for as long as we can, we give it to them. Our children do not always like it not because of jealousy but we are spoiling the young ones and it makes it more difficult for their parents to have control over them. Bad parents, on the other hand, may not have any regrets no matter what they did or did not do for their own children. These are parents who cannot be good grand parents either. ISN’T 2009 A LITTLE BIT TOO FAR YET? Yes, Chicago was chosen over Los Angeles by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the country in our bid for the 2016 Olympics. We still have to be chosen by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. I guess that will be the time when we can start all the fanfare and extravagant celebrations. I could understand the excitement but the waiting is not over yet.

RELIGIOUS GLIMPSES
By Ching S. Molano. T.O., Carm.

Title: The miracle image of the Black Cross

The Mexican Catholics received with great joy, from the beginning of the evangelization, images, painted or carved, that exhibited the great mysteries of the Christian faith. Among these representations, the more accepted were those that showed our Lord Jesus Christ and his mother, especially at the passion and at the Saving Death. On August 18, 1602, a delegation of the Religious Order of Dominican Fathers, arrived in the New Spain (Mexico), bringing with them a beautiful life-sized crucifixion, carved out of a hard ivory-like wood. Designated to settle in the capital, they very quickly acquired a two-square block field, upon which they founded a Catholic Seminary called "Porta-Colli," which in Latin means "Heaven's Door." That image of Jesus crucified from the XVII century, is greatly venerated in Mexico: the Lord of the Poison. This is the history the venerated crucifix was enshrined in the seminary's small chapel. There the Bishop Regent would stop every morning to the white crucifix of the seminary Porta-Colli. He prayed especially for a man who hated him for unknown reasons. Every day when he finished his prayers, he used to kiss humbly the white Christ’s feet. His enemy became aware of this habit and an evil idea came into his mind one night that bad Christian slipped into the chapel and smeared a lethal poison in the Christ's feet. He thought in this manner, when the lips of the priest touched the feet of the crucifix, he would die instantly. After this irreverent act, he stayed to hide and watch. The next morning, the old priest went to the chapel to comply with his daily veneration. After concluding his morning prayer, he approached to kiss the feet of the Sanctified Image, but when he was bending, he and the other people who were there became astonished when the Christ's effigy contracted and pulled his feet away and turned black! The frustrated assassin, after realizing the magnitude of this miracle, confessed with great remorse. He asked the priest to forgive him and he changed his life. The witness of the miracle spread the news, and the deviation to that image spread everywhere. The Christ was called the Lord of the Passion, and today is venerated in the Cathedral of Mexico City. Act of Confidence to the Lord of the Poison Appeal to the Black Christ when you're near the Abyss. Look for relief into His arms, Always open from the Heavens. When your destiny looks uncertain, When misfortune strikes you hard, Be not afraid! Appeal to the Black Christ And He will come with Heavenly aid. If you are a sinner, a corrupt, An unbeliever in desperation, Do not be doubtful! Appeal to the Black Christ. He is mercy. He is love. He is compassion. In His open arms, He embraces all humanity! This is the Triumph of the Cross! FLORES DE MAYO 2007, National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows Belleville

As my wife and I recall, we remember those endearing moments she has shared with us. We can proudly say that we have seen her grow from a baby to an “adultish” five years old. Even as a baby, I started talking to her so the sounds of words will stick in her brain. She knows that we love her very much. Any person can tell, even a baby, that love can emanate from you and she will show love in return. Up to now, Tyla gets carried in my arms before she sleeps at nigh whenever she sleeps at our home. What a delightful child to behold and admire! CHRISTENING PARTY A christening party was held at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Oak Brook Center on February 4, 2007, in honor of Roger and Carrie Liboon’s first child named Landon Angel. He was born on October 4, 2006 at Northwestern Hospital. His grandparents are Rogelio and Lita Liboon of Oak Brook and Robert and Susan Coons of Hinsdale. Congratulations to Baby Landon’s loving family! FOR MOTHER I will write a song for mother, but what song will I write for her? A song full of lovely words that will leap from paper and kiss her, and sleep with her at night, and not make her sad and lonely. I will sing a song for Mother, but what kind of song is right for her? Will the words disappear from paper as tears come down from her cheeks? Then, it is better to sing a song without words to mother. (This was written a long time ago when I was still a student).

VERONICA'S VIBES

Title: Expressions of grief & condolences

Many Asian organizations have expressed their grief and have sent their words of consolation and condolences to the victims’ families and friends for the horrible Virginia Tech killing that killed 33 people on April 16th. A 23-year-old Korea-born student by the name of Seung-Hui Cho killed those victims senselessly when he went on a rampage inside the Virginia Tech campus that fateful morning. From the Korean American community... “On behalf of the Korean American community, a coalition of Korean American organizations extends their most heartfelt sympathies to the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy. It is the hope of the coalition that the Blacksburg community will be brought together in this time of healing. The coalition is concerned for the welfare of the students as well as their families and will look to join other Americans in supporting them in their time of need. "The catastrophe that has befallen the victims and their families is tragic and terrible," said Gie Kim, President of the KAC-DC chapter. "As fellow Americans, our community expresses sympathy with the victims and their families, and the thoughts and prayers of our community are with them." . The KAC, the Korean American Students Conference, the Mirae Foundation, and the Southern California Korean College Student Association have joined to create the "Virginia Tech Memorial Fund" to support those who have been affected by the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech. The Korean American community hopes that the memorial fund will help the victims and their families recover from this tragedy and begin their healing process The Korean American Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based organization established in 1983 in Los Angeles to facilitate the full participation of the Korean American community in civic, legislative and community affairs. KAC has grown into a national organization with nearly 20 chapters and affiliates in major cities, including Washington, D.C., Hawaii and Alaska. As the Korean American community's leading advocacy organization, KAC works to educate, organize, empower and bridge language, cultural and information gaps. Statements of Condolences by President Roh Moo-hyun of Korea SOUTH KOREA-- President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea expressed his condolences on April 17 and on April 18 in Korean Standard time regarding the tragedies at Virginia Tech. President Roh said that he was profoundly shocked when he was briefed in Seoul on April 17 of the shooting incident at the university. He also expressed his sympathies for the bereaved families and quick recoveries for the injured. Cheong Wa Dae - the office of the president - issued the following statement of condolence: "President Roh Moo-hyun was briefed today on the shooting rampage that killed more than 30 people and injured many at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the United States on April 16 (EST). The President said he was shocked by the unimaginable incident and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and his hope that the injured would recover soon." After the identity of the gunman was revealed to be a Korea-born permanent resident in the United States, Cheong Wa Dae issued the following statement of condolence in the morning of April 18: "Upon being informed later today that the tragic shooting that took place at Virginia Tech on April 16 was perpetrated by a Korean permanent resident in the United States, President Roh Moo-hyun stated for the second time during the day that he was shocked beyond description by the enormity of the incident. Following up on his earlier conveyance of condolences, he again expressed, on behalf of all Korean people, the most profound sorrow and offered words of comfort to the bereaved families, President George W. Bush and all Americans. At the same time, President Roh expressed his earnest wish that the enormously saddened Korean American community, along with all American citizens, would be able to wisely cope with the staggering trauma." From Organizations of Chinese Americans (OCA) Washington, DC – OCA, a national Asian Pacific American organization dedicated to ensuring social justice for Asian Pacific Americans, expressed its support for Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, friends, and family members in the wake of Virginia Tech’s tragic shootings. “The events at Virginia Tech were horrible and devastating, and OCA extends its support and sympathies to the entire grieving community,” said Ginny Gong, OCA National President. “We hope that the healing process is swift and complete for all those affected.” “We, like the rest of the country, are shocked at these murders,” said Michael Lin, OCA Executive Director. “We trust that the administration and law enforcement authorities will do their utmost to ensure the health and safety of all students, faculty, and staff at Virginia Tech during this time of tragedy.” From Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) SAN FRANCISCO--Like the rest of the nation, we at the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) are stunned at the news of the shooting at Virginia Tech. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and friends as they cope with this horrific incident. As coverage of the Virginia Tech shooting continues to unfold, AAJA urges all media to avoid using racial identifiers unless there is a compelling or germane reason. There is no evidence at this early point that the race or ethnicity of the suspected gunman has anything to do with the incident, and to include such mention serves only to unfairly portray an entire people. The effect of mentioning race can be powerfully harmful. It can subject people to unfair treatment based simply on skin color and heritage. We further remind members of the media that the standards of news reporting should be universal and applied equally no matter the platform or medium, including blogs. We at AAJA, representing approximately 2,000 reporters, editors, photographers and executives in the industry, encourage journalists to refer to style and reference books, both within their own shop as well as AAJA's at http://www.aaja.org/resources/apa_handbook/. We also invite those with concerns or questions to contact AAJA as a resource for issues of fair and accurate coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. AAJA's national office is at (415) 346-2051, National@aaja.org, www.aaja.org. The AAJA is a non-profit professional and educational organization with approximately 2,000 members across the United States and in Asia. Founded in 1981, AAJA has been at the forefront of change in the journalism industry. AAJA's mission is to encourage Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) to enter the ranks of journalism, to work for fair and accurate coverage of AAPIs, and to increase the number of AAPI journalists and news managers in the industry. AAJA is an alliance partner in UNITY Journalists of Color, along with the Native American Journalists Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and National Association of Black Journalists. For more information, visit www.aaja.org. COLUMBINE...VIRGINIA TECH...WHAT'S MISSING? ...MORALS ...First it was Columbine, then Virginia Tech. What's next? With unthinkable atrocities occurring these days with increasing frequency and intensity, we must ask ourselves, what's changed in our culture that allows such needless and senseless tragedies to occur? To put it simply: People imitate pop culture and pop culture lacks morals and now pop culture has come home to roost. This is not to say that everyone who sees a violent film will act out violently but it is undeniable that the stars we emulate and the films we watch can have strong influence on us. One solution to this problem is for moral Americans to take back the movie industry for the good of our nation and our youth, the future leaders of our nation. So, what does it take for Hollywood to "repent" and start producing decent movies once again? Money. They need to see clean-cut films turn a profit. And that cannot happen unless decent people turn out to see decent films when they are released. (From Media Timb) In a timely manner that week, I had a chance to interview Dr. Melissa Perrin, a psychotherapist, and a member of chicagohealers.com, in providing parenting tips about “how to raise a compassionate child.” Experts say it's never too soon to start teaching children morals. A child can express empathy by age two, according to /Parent & Child /magazine. Having an understanding that children are made with an innate desire to conform and be good members of society is the first step for raising a compassionate child. She says having expectations for children is the key step, such as expecting them to behave, to participate, to contribute to the household and to have structure." It was a very interesting and an apropos interview for our CPRTV viewers.

WHAT'S IN MY HEART?
By Esther B. Jimenez

This is about egg hunting in a dreamland,
There are no kids, just mature individuals.
Hundreds of eggs scattered on the ground,
Some are visible, some are hidden.
The egg hunting starts at early dawn,
Few adults came with baskets on their hands.
"Be careful," says the warning signs,
You might step on the fragile ground.
There it is, one yellow egg found,
Another with blue, red and green;
The adults enjoy their egg hunting,
Forgetting the worries behind.
This egg hunting is unique, because
There are messages inside the eggs,
So when the egg hunters start breaking
the eggs, they found virtues at hand.
The messages say a lot about love,
patience, charity, forgiveness,
faith, understanding, honesty, obedience,
generosity, self-control, humility,
and many, many more virtues.
But ONE egg is found unnoticed,
visible near the cedar tree, extra
delicate looking golden egg.
It rolls in the middle of the land,
breaks itself, and the message
says, "JESUS"........
Easter egg hunting is something the
kids look forward on this Easter Sunday;
How about us adults???
From now on, let us ponder on the
essence of egg hunting virtues.
And let this parable be our gauge
in life.
(Always instill in your hearts the
Existence of the Real Easter,
the Risen LORD JESUS CHRIST)

EASTER IN OUR HEARTS

Easter is not only the celebration of
flowers and bunnies;
It is the celebration of life.
It is not only the concept of
CHRIST resurrection,
But our relationship with GOD's Son.
It is not only going to church,
It is what we hear in the gospel,
the very Word of GOD.
It is not only greetings of "Happy Easter"
But saying gentle words to everyone.
It is not only new clothes, new attire,
But new life, new hearts and new minds.
Easter is not elsewhere,
But Easter is always in our hearts.

HAPPY POST-EASTER TO ALL!!!

GOD'S ECONOMICS (The Biblical Principles of True Prosperity)
By: Rev. Richard Mirpuri

Title: The incredible bible

During a sermon, Dr. Joseph A. Parker said, "Some have found fault with me. They say I am old-fashioned and out-of-date. I am always quoting the bible. 'Why not turn to science," they say. To this he replied, "There is a poor widow here who has lost her only son. She wants to know if she will ever see him again. If science can give her an answer, I will put my bible away." So he took the bible and put it on the seat behind him. "Will this woman see her son again?" he asked. "Where is he? Does death end all?" What has science to say?" There was a long pause. "We are waiting for the answer. The poor widow is anxious." Another long pause. "This woman's heart is breaking. Science must speak up. Nothing to say? Surely, there must be something!" Yet, another long pause. "Then we must take the book." And here, Dr. Parker reverently took the bible and with great deliberation opened it and read several verses: "I shall go to Him…the dead shall arise…for this corruptible must put on incorruption and this moral body must put on immortality… Oh, death, where is thy sting?…I saw the dead, small and great stand before God." Finally, closing the bible and patting it affectionately, Dr. Parker said, "I think we will stick to this book." And what an incredible book indeed! Consider these facts: • It was in 1976 that the American Bible Society completed printing and distributing 2 billion bibles. That was 31 years ago! Imagine what the figure must be now. It must be staggering! • The bible holds the "Guinness" record for being the most distributed book. • The Gideons distribute 1 million copies around the world every 27 days. • In Brussels, Belgium you have vending machines once used for candy and cigarettes now dispensing copies of the 4 gospels for 20 cents. • A microfilm packet containing Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," in 16 languages and a complete revised standard version of the bible were deposited on the moon by Apollo 14 Lunar Entry Module Commander Edgar Mitchell. • The Living Bible Version and the Good News Bible version have become bestsellers surpassing the sale of any secular book in history. • The first book in the world printed with movable types was the bible. Johannes Guttenberg, inventor of the printing press printed 180 copies from 1453-1456. Only about 50 of these have been located, most of them in very poor condition. For anyone interested, a well-preserved 2-volume set of the Guttenberg edition was on sale in New York City for $3.2 million. • This man was a habitual drunkard and rumored to be addicted to other vices which could not be mentioned in public. He married off his children like pawns to suit his foreign policy. He drained the royal treasury to meet the cost of his extravagance in wine and women. He was described as having a big head, a slobbering tongue, wore quilted clothes, had rickety legs, goggle eyes and stood out as a grotesque contrast to a figure of monarchy with his lack of personal dignity, his coarse buffoonery, his drunkenness, his pedantry and his contemptible cowardice. Yet in God's over-ruling providence -- this man was used to assemble scholars and pushed through the authorized translation of the bible in 1611 - the most influential bible version of all times. His name? King James I. These are just some of the things that make the bible truly an incredible book - the Word of God. Do you have a bible? Are you reading and meditating on it? But above all, are you living by it? It is Spirit and it is life! Glory to God! Better start now before it is too late. WORD OF GRACE-SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO CELEBRATES 1ST YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH MOVIE ACTRESS PILAR PILAPIL The Word of Grace - South San Francisco celebrated its 1st year anniversary during a 3-day celebration from March 23 - 25, 2007. GULONG NG PALAD
By Ging Micor

TITLE: Ang malaking problema ng isang ina

Dear Ging, Hindi biro ang aking responsibilidad sa buhay. Tatlo ang aking anak, dalawa sa kanila ang ipinanganak na may kapansanan na cerebral palsy. “You would ask the Lord, bakit ako may abnormal na anak? Why of all people, ako? But then and again, you will have to accept na ganun na 'yan eh. Binigay na ‘yan. So I’m sure in God’s perspective siguro binigyan niya ako ng anak na ganyan because kaya ko. Silang dalawa ay masaya, at they are just like normal children. Dalawa silang naglalaro. Dalawa silang nag-aaway. Hindi ako dumaraing ngunit ayaw kong maiwanan ang aking mga anak na ito. Ano ang aking gagawin? MARISSA Dear Marissa, Para sa isang ina, malaking hamon na ang harapin at tanggapin ang pagkakaroon ng isang anak na may cerebral palsy. Ano pa kung dalawa? Alam kong sina Popong at JR ang iyong buong buhay. Just be positive in life. Hindi ba’t naniniwala ka namang sila ang dahilan kung bakit siya nasa mundong ito at kung bakit ikaw ay natutong magmahal rin ng lubusan at walang kondisyon? Kung ikaw ay maituturin na isang mabuting ina ay dahil na rin sa iyong mga abak. You have shown this. You accepted them mapa-abnormal, o mapa-special child, and they are your children. Hindi sila toys that you can just throw away. You value the life that God has given to you. Tama ang iyong ginagawa--isa kang butihing ina at saludo ako sa iyo. Huwag kang mawawalan ng pag-asa at somehow merong tulong ang Diyos na darating sa iyong buhay. Always be positive in life. Don’t give up. Huwag kang matakot sa future at kaya mo iyan. GING

ATTY. GURFINKEL'S IMMIGRATION CORNER
By: Michael J. Gurfinkel, Esq.

Title: USCIS Director discusses temporary guest worker program

Recently, Emilio T. Gonzalez, the Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) appeared before Congress to give his thoughts and views on the proposals for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR), including a Temporary Worker Program (TWP). Director Gonzalez stated that he would “look forward to working with my DHS colleagues, the Administration, and Congress on the vital and overdue comprehensive [immigration] reform legislation.” Further, the various steps taken at USCIS to improve its processing capabilities, “have substantially enhanced our ability to help successfully administer a Temporary Worker Program and other obligations of the agency.” In other words, the Director is in favor of a Temporary Worker Program and USCIS will be able to handle the processing of any Guest Worker applications. While the eligibility requirements for a temporary worker program are still being discussed and debated in Congress, the Director noted that there are at least 5 “pillars” that are necessary in order for immigration reform to succeed: 1) Effective border control. 2) Interior Enforcement. (In other words, catching and removing illegal aliens) 3) A temporary worker program, to provide a legal channel for employers to hire foreign workers to do jobs Americans are unwilling to do. 4) Bring illegal immigrants already in the country out of the shadows. 5) Help new immigrants assimilate into American Society. Director Gonzalez noted that any new immigration reform should include the following features: 1) Clear and consistent application (or eligibility) standards, that are “simple and straightforward”. In addition the information provided by applicants (to prove their identity) must be verifiable. (This is to prevent people from using fake documents or assumed names, like in past amnesties, where people applied for benefits such as SAW or CSS/LULAC in a different name). 2) A limit on judicial review of application decisions, to ensure that any denials do not become a “source of never-ending litigation”. In other words, if a person is denied, the right to appeal may be very limited. 3) Illegal aliens who have already broken the law should not have greater access to our courts than those who have legitimately applied for a visa or green card from outside our country. There is no reason to grant “special treatment” to those who rejected our laws to have to the U.S. (In other words, TNT’s who overstayed and violated their visas should not have an advantage over those who waited in their home country). 4) USCIS must have sufficient time, flexibility, and resources to successfully implement and manage a Temporary Worker Program. The Director also noted that there have been major improvements at the USCIS to detect and catch those who are attempting to commit fraud or apply for benefits when they are not entitled. There is a new National Security and Records Verification Division, which includes the USCIS’s Fraud, Detection, Records and Verification Division. There is also a Benefit Revocation Unit, which allows USCIS to revoke “the immigration status of those who commit crimes” or threaten US National Security. The bottom line is that while there is no Temporary Worker Program yet in place (and thus, there is nothing for you to apply for at the present time), at least the USCIS is in favor of such a program. Let’s hope that Congress will finally pass a Guest Worker law. Once a law is passed, you should definitely seek the advice of a reputable attorney, (not an immigration consultant, notario, or friend or family member who may not be knowledgeable in the law), who can assess your eligibility, and help you apply for immigration benefits to which you may be entitled. TITLE: Child Care

Child care is a common issue that comes up for many families. Along with other family decisions, a question arises regarding who will take care of the children when parents are at work, attending to other obligations, or need to spend time without the children. Although in most cases, women remain to be the primary caregiver, less are the days when women are expected to abandon their career, stay home and care full time for their children. Common child care options include family members, a nanny or a babysitter, or a child care facility such as day care. Choosing a childcare provider is never an easy process. It requires gathering thorough information as well as using one’s own intuitive knowledge. Ideally, the decision is based on the safety as well as the quality of care for the child. It is a decision primarily based upon what is considered best for the child but also for what is best for the family’s needs. Different child care options present different benefits for children and their families. Choosing a setting for child care can also be based on different developmental stages. A child’s needs may be best served if he is interacting with other children of his own age. Transitioning the type of child care is seen most often when children reach school age. Some families may not have as many choices when it comes to child care especially when finances are a problem. Child care cost is rising and quality child care is costly. Having a child be cared for by one of the parents or a family member maybe the only options because of financial difficulties. On the other hand, families may expect that their children be looked after by their parents, grandparents, or other family members. In this instance, the norm is for family members to care for children in the family. It is not uncommon to baby-sit for nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Through this practice, it is conveyed that children are rooted in their families primarily by being cared for by their own family members. Understandably, people have differing preferences about how they want their child to be cared for in their absence. The childcare provider’s clear understanding of the parents’ parenting styles is a must. Childcare providers may say: “I love children” or “I’ve always taken cared of children.” But what do these statements really mean? It is critical to know for instance: Is the childcare provider able to be soothing as the child cries? Does she communicate effectively to the child? Is she patient? A childcare provider must be attuned to each child’s unique needs rather than solely based her practice on set assumptions on how to care for a child. It is common, however, at times a faulty assumption that family members are the best people to care for the child. Because they are family members, it is assumed that they have the very best intention and knowledge to provide child care. This assumption is anchored in the idea that family members are less likely to abuse or neglect family members. Sadly, both strangers and family members are capable of providing less than adequate child care. Another faulty assumption is that individuals, who have raised their own children, whether they are family members or paid childcare providers, are assumed to be able to provide better care for children. The know-how of caring for a child is not based upon whether that individual has a child (or has previously cared for a child) but it is about his/her ability to be able to be present and attentive to each child’s unique needs. Having had a child does not guarantee one to be a good parent or childcare provider. Assuming that having cared for a child is enough to care for another child is unsubstantial. Overall, it is important that the childcare provider’s parenting styles coincide with what the parents are comfortable with. Stressing your requirements and preferences on parenting styles is a must in building a secure and consistent environment for the child. Nonetheless, these are also to be conveyed to family members who are around the child and may provide care to the child. IMMIGRATION
By Robert R. Gard, Esq,

TITLE: NOW A TRADITION

U.S. House of Representatives and the Bush Administration have Unveiled their Respective Plans for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (“CIR”) -- Still Waiting for U.S. Senate Proposal Comprehensive immigration reform legislation (“CIR”) is still on the agenda of both Congress and the White House, and all parties appear to acknowledge that, due to political and campaign considerations, any efforts to introduce, debate, and pass “CIR” legislation must be completed before the end of August of 2007, or the issues will have to wait until after the November 2008 election. While it was initially thought that the U.S. Senate would be out of the gates first with their proposed CIR legislation, and that the U.S. House of Representative would thereafter introduce their version of CIR legislation, many of the U.S. Senate leaders from both parties encountered so much dissention from their colleagues to the idea of a major re-write and overhaul of the McCain/Kennedy legislation passed by the Senate last year, that the Senate has reportedly scrapped plans to draft a completely new proposal, and will basically re-introduce the McCain/Kennedy legislation that they had passed last year (CIR was held up last year by the unwillingness of the U.S. House of Representatives to accept the terms and provisions of the Senate’s McCain/Kennedy legislation, as the House supported enforcement only provisions). The pressure is building on Congress and the Bush Administration to quickly get something done on CIR legislation. Since the entire allotment of new H-1B Specialty Worker visas for Fiscal Year 2008 (beginning October 1, 2007) was oversubscribed on the first available filing date of April 2, 2007, and the special allotment of immigrant “Schedule A” visas for Registered Nurses and Physical Therapists was exhausted before the end of last year, the pressure is intensifying for immediate legislative “fixes” of specific issues or problems, such as the shortage of H-1B nonimmigrant visa numbers, and the shortage of immigrant visa numbers for Registered Nurses and Physical Therapists, without waiting for those issues to be dealt with in CIR legislation. This article will present a quick overview of the two different CIR legislative proposals emanating from the House of Representatives and from the White House. On March 22, 2007, U.S. Representatives Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Jeff Flake(R-Ariz.) held a press conference to announce the introduction of a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill. The title of the bill is “Security Through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy”, also known as the “STRIVE Act of 2007”. The Strive Act seeks to create a new guest worker program for about 400,000 low-skilled workers (including a specific set-aside for agricultural workers) in short supply in the U.S., improve and stiffen employee work authorization verification requirements and procedures (with what could be considered to be a national employment authorization identification card), overhaul immigrant visa categories and reduce backlogs for visa availability, and provide for stronger border and interior enforcement. To satisfy those most interested in workplace enforcement and border issues, the Strive Act requires that border security and workplace enforcement provisions must be enacted and show clear results before any of the other changes beneficial to the immigrant community can go forward. The Strive act provides that “The Secretary of Homeland Security (“Secretary”) may not implement the New Worker program or grant conditional nonimmigrant status under the STRIVE Act until he submits a certification to the President and Congress that the following conditions have been met: (1) a report to Congress on the implementation of the border surveillance technology improvements, including target dates, has been submitted; (2) the systems and infrastructure necessary to carry out the improvements to immigration document security, including documents that will be issued under the New Worker Program and to aliens granted conditional nonimmigrant classification, have been tested and are ready for use; and (3) the first phase of the Electronic Employment Verification System for critical infrastructure employers has been implemented.” Undocumented immigrants would be eligible for legalization if they arrived in the U.S. before June 1, 2006. They would have to pay a $2,000 fine and back taxes, and pass background and security checks. If after six years they have learned English and civics, kept a clean record, and the head of household has left and reentered the U.S. legally (there would not be a requirement to return to the applicant’s home country, and this requirement could be satisfied by a departure to and re-admission from Canada or Mexico), they could become legal permanent residents (“green card” holders). There would be exceptions to this requirement that may be utilized by children, the elderly, single heads of households, business owners and those in military service. On March 28, 2007, the White House publicized the Bush Administration’s CIR proposals. Previously, the Bush Administration had been criticized for failing to provide Congress with more specific guidelines and provisions for what legislation would be favored and supported by the Administrative Branch. The White House plan has been described as solidly playing to the President’s enforcement oriented “base”, and has been characterized as a deficit reduction act on the backs of undocumented immigrants. As described by several administration officials, the proposal would provide for a national work identification card and other stringent enforcement and border security measures, and would also allow currently undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States under a new “Z” visa. They could apply for lawful permanent resident (“green card”) status, so long as they get in line behind others legally in the U.S. or already in line for an immigrant visa. They would apply for extensions of this temporary status in three year increments, without any limit on the number of three year extensions available, and they would be required to undergo periodic background checks while waiting, and they could not sponsor derivative family members to join them in the U.S. while in this interim “waiting” status. For each three year extension of this temporary waiting line status, the applicant would pay $3,500 in fines and filing fees, and when (if) finally qualified to convert the temporary status to permanent resident status, the applicant would pay an additional filing fee/fine of $10,000. Undocumented immigrants could begin individually enrolling for the program six months after the legislation becomes effective, and the registration or enrollment period would remain open for up to one year thereafter. The White House plan would also provide for a new “Y” nonimmigrant visa for up to about 400,000 lesser skilled temporary workers. These workers would be outside of the U.S. when sponsored by employers for temporary or seasonal positions for which U.S. workers cannot be found. They would pay a processing fee of about $1,500, and could be admitted to the U.S. for up to two years (cannot bring along derivative dependent spouse or children). After each two year period of authorized temporary stay, the worker would be required to return home for at least six months before being eligible for another two year temporary stay in the U.S. (of course, another processing fee would have to be paid), and there could be an aggregate total of up to six years in the U.S. in this temporary worker status (initial two year period, plus up to two extensions). The President’s proposal would also dramatically revise the immigrant visa system, categories, and applications procedures, without really adding any more visa numbers. The Diversity Visa Lottery would be terminated, and the family based categories for over 21 year old and married children would be eliminated. Also eliminated would be the immigrant visa category for brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens. The immigrant visa system would become a “merit-based” or points system (similar to the system used in Canada), where points are awarded for English language skills, education credentials, specific skill sets in short supply, and other factors. All those potential applicants already holding approved immigrant visa petitions but unable to immigrate due to existing backlogs would be required to reapply and provide updated information (and, of course, pay another application fee of at least $500). Those turned down could then apply under the merit-based system with additional “points” awarded for having U.S. citizen family members. I should be able to report more on the process of securing viable CIR legislation in the months to come. In the meantime, many hope that Congress and the White House will address the critically immediate concerns of insufficient nonimmigrant H-1B visas and a lengthening backlog in immigrant visas for Registered Nurses and Physical Therapists. On March 27th, the Army's new acting surgeon general said she is concerned about long-term morale because the military lacks money to hire enough nurses and mental health specialists to treat thousands of troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. One would think that some of the brighter minds in Congress could come up with a plan to enable the military and Veterans Administration to recruit and hire foreign born and licensed Registered Nurses and Physical Therapists to perform their professional services for the military and Veterans Administration for a set number of years in exchange for consideration for an immigrant visa. There are many potential problems and issues to be resolved in enacting such a plan, as most nurses in the U.S. armed forces are actually commissioned officers (requiring U.S. citizenship), and this structure would need to be legally circumvented, and there would be political and diplomatic sensitivity involved in recruiting non-citizens for service in the U.S. military. TITLE: Naisy Dolar loses to Chicago's Political Giant

*Chicago wins US bid for Olympic 2016 *Virginia Tech, place of 'the deadliest campus massacre in history' *Dalai Lama to speak in Chicago about 'inner peace' on May 6 *An open letter to Philippine Ambassador Willy Gaa re 'Ambassadors Tour to RP' *Philippine Chamber of Commerce to host Health Care Convention Naisy Dolar, the youngest and the first Filipino Asian American Chicago Aldermanic candidate who challenged the oldest Alderman "icon" Bernard Stone at Chicago's northwest 50th ward, lost by only 600 votes at a run-off elections last week! But Naisy’s indomitable spirit had made history among Asian Americans. To her numerous racially-diverse supporters especially the voters from the 50th Ward where Stone, literally, is a long-time stone fixture, Naisy is a winner! She won their hearts. They have a very strong faith in her ability to bring CHANGES in their ward. Mainstream-wise, Naisy gained the endorsements of the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times, the Union groups, and several newspapers . However, looks like the time has not yet come for this young ASIAN AMERICAN to be a part of the Black and White Chicago politics. Following his victory, the Chicago Sun Times quoted Ald. Stone saying, 'I proved age is not a barrier'. True, but his age is not really the issue. Firstly, Stone has the 1001% support of Mayor Daley and of businesses in his Ward carrying his election signs. Naisy did not receive huge support from fellow Asian American business owners around Devon, the "India in Chicago." Nonetheless, "Naisy is still a winner. She won the hearts of many." Naisy had set the pace for Asian Americans to wade the rough waters of Chicago politics fully supported by Da Machine!. WE SALUTE YOU, NAISY. You are a role model to the younger generation. And even to the older generation. You have shown the strength of the Brown Race in the Chicago political race and the chances of victory… some days. After all, WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN… *** Never in the numerous re-election victories of Mayor Richard M. Daley have we seen him literally leapt to his feet from his chair -- until last Saturday, April 14 -- when the US Olympic selection committee announced that CHICAGO, our "kind of Town" won over Los Angeles as the official U.S. bid to host the Olympic in 2016! Thrusting his fist in the air, uttering a jubilant "YEAH", the Mayor sported a real big smile signifying an awesome joy and victory! "I am so excited and happy that's why I leapt from my chair," Mayor Daley said grinning from ear to ear. "I am very happy for Chicago and for the people." However, we've only just begun. From now on, Chicago with the leadership of insurance executive Patrick Ryan, the Mayor's point man for the Olympic bid, the Olympic Committee has to really work hard to convince the Olympic International Committee that CHICAGO is Da Best Place on Earth to hold the 2016 Olympic! Chicago's most likely rival countries are Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Prague, the Czech Republic, and Rome. The final decision will be made on October, 2009. Chicago's show of strength to win the bid on its final selection was shown last Monday, when the city led by Mayor Daley, celebrated the first-phase victory at the Daley Plaza, attended by athletes, government officials, and Chicagoans from all ages and walks of life. Very much enthused, the Mayor told the huge crowd that "this victory, our victory, shows the passion of Chicago and the Chicagoans." He showed no buts that Chicago will be DA Host of Olympic 2016! Daley thanked the City Council and other government officials for their support for Chicago. Every Chicagoan I believe, share the optimistic vision of Mayor Daley. Chicago is the most well-known city in the world. Hosting the Olympic will place Chicago on the uppermost global stage. The Commercial Advantage has now begun. After all, Chicago is blessed with a beautiful lakefront, parks, and most of all, in spite of our human imperfections, Chicagoans are warm and friendly folks. God bless Chicago! Long live Mayor Daley! CAMPUS MASSACRE IN VIRGINIA TECH: On a sad note, on the very same day that Chicago was celebrating her first-phase victory to host the Olympic, Virginia Tech campus, situated by the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains in Blacksburg, Virginia, became the seat of the "deadliest and bloodiest shooting rampage in modern history," said the university spokesperson, in deep grief and disbelief. The shooting, which according to reports, started as early as 7:15 a.m. Monday morning, where two students were shot dead at a dormitory. Two hours later, the shooter identified by the Virginia police as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui, proceeded to a classroom, chained the door from outside, and gunned down students, leaving 32 dead, some wounded, then killed himself. The shooter, according to reports, was a native of South Korea who migrated to the United States with his parents in 1992. He was a loner who left a "list of grievances." Latest reports Cho has a history of "mental illness." President and Mrs. George Bush attended the convocation with Virginia governor. Students, faculty members, and especially the parents of the victims, are coping very hard with the tragedy. It was another Columbine tragedy except that this is the worst campus massacre in history! Some students express fear and apprehension over their safety. To lose a loved one is a grief that will never go away… especially when tragedy struck unexpectedly without warning. It is indeed very sad and painful. Happenings like these, ironically, are what make us, human beings, get closer to our God. *** An open letter to the new Philippine Ambassador to the U.S., the Hon. Willy Gaa (original copy was sent to him): Dear Ambassador Gaa: My name is Elsie Sy-Niebar, senior editor of Via Times Newsmagazine, a retired employee from the City of Chicago, and more importantly, a community person and advocate for good causes. I am a widow, married for 26 years to an American native of Chicago, who loved the Philippines and my "tribe," as he teasingly called my Big Family. Yes, I love America, my second Homeland. I love the challenge of being a part of America's racial tapestry. But I remain a true Pilipino sa diwa at puso. Taking a trip to our beloved Philippines is a treat. It's not just a vacation but a homecoming deeply felt in the "Heart of a Homing Pigeon." That's why I think this "Ambassador's Trip" to the Philippines sponsored by the government is an excellent program; it is not simply a visit but one great way to encourage Filipinos abroad to re-visit the Philippines. More importantly, invite non-Filipinos like our American spouses, "Significant Others," and friends, who come with us on this trip. I was one of the participants in the first Ambassador's Visit in 2005. On behalf of the Philippines, I was very happy to see several Americans and other non-Filipino nationalities joining the trip. Lorne, my (American) "Significant Other" was one of those I convinced to join the tour; he loved it. Overall, that trip was okay, my metaphor for "there's room for improvement." Let me share with you some of my observations and suggestions. During the luncheon reception in Malacanang, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in her welcome speech, stressed the importance of "the friendship between the United States and the Philippines." But never did she acknowledge or thank the presence of non-Filipinos (i.e., Americans and few other nationalities) who joined the trip, who were present right under her nose. She focused her speech on Filipinos and, of course, her "accomplishments" as president. Overall, I sensed no warmth in GMA's speech, lots of us went to sleep. Blame it on the "jet log", huh? Here's an excerpt from one of the several Filipino folksongs my late mother taught when I was very little: "The welcome in your face, gives beauty to the place." Press people like me were not given an opportunity to interview her. Her own loss. At the Mabuhay Night held at Shangrila Hotel, I cornered former Ambassador del Rosario and suggested to him to please acknowledge our non-Filipino guests to make them feel so much a "part" of this visit. The Ambassador was very amiable to my suggestion. Like Arroyo, he did not acknowledge the presence or, better yet, the cooperation of non-Pinoys in that Ambassador's Trip. Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano (I knew his name from the brochure) delivered his welcome speech, same content, if you know what I mean. After the fabulous Pitoy Moreno fashion show, I saw Durano and del Rosario posing with some "selected guests" (their friends)? I did a very brief interview with the Ambassador so I had few souvenir poses with him. But Durano did not socialize with his guests, let alone THANK them for their cooperation in the visit to the Philippines project of the Department of Tourism, his turf. Or even just going around to say "kamusta" or "hi" to the "tourists" who came a long way. Too hectic for the Tourism Secretary? To this day, I wouldn't recognize Mr.. Durano even if he were seated next to me at the dinner table. Lorne and I joined the group that flew to Puerto Princesa, Palawan for the out-of-town trip. With us was Consul General Rowena Sanchez (to me, the most humble ConGen), a Filipino and American couple with their young son, a smart one at that; and other Kababayans. Puerto Princesa is indeed a beautiful and very clean city! I would like to commend Mayor Ed Hagedorn but he was nowhere to be seen. The hotel staff where we stayed told us that the mayor had dinner at the hotel on the very same evening our group arrived. Mayor Hagedorn could never miss our arrival because a giant banner hung right at the front of the hotel screaming to welcome the "Ambassador’s Group" from the United States Was it too much for Mayor Hagedorn to stop and greet ConGen Sanchez and the group coming 10,000 miles away to visit his city, and cooperating with his government's project? I was really very interested to write about Puerto Princesa, a model city for environmental cleanliness so I called the Mayor's office for an interview. I told the secretary I am so impressed I want to help Mayor Hagedorn promote Puerto Princesa in Chicago. We stayed for four days in Puerto Princesa. Mayor Hagedorn never returned my call. Some Filipino hospitality, huh? Our so-called tours were not-so-great, either. I wished we had the chance to talk to some inmates at the famous "Prisons without Walls" in Hagedorn's town. The only place that "welcomed" us is the gift shop where we bought souvenirs, mostly made by the prisoners. The Little People who make a Big Difference: Bing Espinosa, the tricycle driver whom Lorne befriended at the marketplace, deserved a BIG THANK YOU! Like two juveniles getting lost in a People-Crowded-Wonderland, Lorne and I rode on Bing's tricycle into the nooks and crannies of the market where we shopped under Bing's watchful eye so we won't be duped or maloloko, according to him. Bing, our "Hurley Man", showed us the city and the nice people around. After our "Joy Ride," Bing dropped us at the hotel and was so thankful for the dollar and pesos "tip" Lorne gave him, equivalent to maybe, his one-week's income from driving his tricycle. Bing's reception made Puerto Princesa unforgettable to Lorne and me. Wisdom of a great Russian writer named Zolzynetsein: "The greatest people in this world are the little people in the provinces." Suggestions, Mr. Ambassador: In the interest of keeping our noted Filipino hospitality and warm friendship to our guests, how about suggesting to the Committee arranging this Ambassadors & Consuls General Trip to (a) request those Big Guns in the government to briefly acknowledge in their "welcome speeches" the presence of non-Filipinos joining the trip as a gesture of "welcome and appreciation" from the Philippine government; (b) request a brief appearance of government official in the provinces or cities being visited to "officially welcome" the visitors for a few minutes; and (c) provide a "Tourist Guide" to the group when visiting places included in their itinerary. Other members of our Group 2005 told me the mayor and even the governor of some provinces in the Visayas honored them with a "warm welcome" to their respective provinces. Friendship was forged; some visitors gave their hosts an "open invitation" as guests to their homes should those government officials visit the United States. Wasn't that great? Mr. Ambassador. I am not demanding that Pinoy Tourists from America be given a red-carpet welcome. My suggestions are meant to let live our Filipino Appreciation towards our "houseguests" which is the Hallmark of the Filipino Hospitality. . Am looking forward to joining the Ambassador's Trip, next time. Hats off to Ms. Vernie Morales, our hardworking and very helpful Director of Philippine Tourism in Chicago. Vernie is far from being a bureaucrat, yet she does her job well, and according to protocol. Sincerely, Elsie *** COMMUNITY EVENTS: The Filipino American Lions Club of Chicago will hold a SPRING DANCE AND INDUCTION OF OFFICERS on Friday, May 4, at Poretta Banquets, 3718 N. The whole-day event will be held at the Chicago Washington Public Library Atrium, 400 South State Street, downtown Chicago. . The choice for health care industry as the subject at the convention is to get the word out into the mainstream about the fact that about 80% of home health care businesses are owned and/or run by Filipino-Americans. Home health care touches the lives and provides the health care needs of every American from the ethnic and mainstream arena in America. Health care services provided by the Filipino Americans permeates across ethnic borders. In Chicago alone, 132,746 are employed in the health care industry, the highest manpower count among the city's 10 largest industries. The Philippine American Chamber encourages other chambers of commerce to participate, forging stronger cooperation and alliances in the process. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce is inviting corporate sponsors for the convention, a very ideal place to expose and promote their products and services. Convention speakers, according to Crost, are representatives from government offices in charge of regulating the health care industry, consumers, businesses and health care providers. Speakers will discuss compliance issues, growing and expansion of businesses, managing risks, financing and other opportunities. BRAINS AWARDS The conference will be capped with the presentation of the first two International BRAINS (Business Recognizing Achievements and Initiatives) awards, to honor one successful businessperson and one "budding" entrepreneur doing business among various international trading communities throughout Chicagoland. PACCGC president Flores said that nominations for BRAINS candidates will be sought from various Chambers of Commerce and different business groups throughout Chicagoland. "One of the objectives of this event is to network and build partnership with corporate offices and businesses in other communities. Since Filipino Americans are more noted as healthcare providers as shown by our doctors, nurses, and those in other medical fields, the PACCGC chose health care as the subject of this convention. I would like to thank Atty. Maricar Madrid Crost for chairing this event in spite of the demands of legal profession. And, of course, for the hard work of our new executive secretary, Connie Traggiano, and our Chamber officers and members. Putting all our heads and brains together, we can do it." Nominations for the BRAINS award will be sought from the Fil-Am business sectors and other chambers of commerce and different business groups in Chicagoland. For more information, please contact BRAINS Awards Chair, Atty. Mary Carmen

TITLE: What's media's stand on ethnic reporting of carnage?

What prompted this column was a statement made by AAJA (Asian American Journalists Association) regarding the most recent media coverage on the Virginia Tech shooting incident. It says, “As coverage of the Virginia Tech shooting continues to unfold, AAJA urges all media to avoid using racial identifiers unless there is a compelling or germane reason. There is no evidence at this early point that the race or ethnicity of the suspected gunman has anything to do with the incident, and to include such mention serves only to unfairly portray an entire people. “The effect of mentioning race can be powerfully harmful. It can subject people to unfair treatment based simply on skin color and heritage.” I beg to disagree with AAJA statement and stand on this particular reporting. I came from the Philippines, and I still remember while growing up, the horrible event of World War II. The history in schools showed us the headlines when the Japanese attacked the Philippines and other neighboring Asian countries. If AAJA was present then, their choice headliner would read, “The Asian attacked another Asian country (no specific Asian race). During the Korean conflict, the division of Chinese regular army invaded South Korea, but maybe AAJA would rewrite the headline again as, “Asian invaded another Asian country,” (again, no specifics) and so on. The conflict between Pakistan and India also made headlines but not reported as Asian fighting Asian. Meanwhile, a Reuters headline engages in a bit of invidious stereotyping...”English Major Blamed for Virginia Tech Shooting.” Where’s the English Major Journalists Association (if there’s such a thing) when you need it? The killing of 33 students (including Cho and 2 teachers) across the campus of Virginia Tech is awful. And yet it seems somehow that the public emotional response has been more controlled than in the time past. This is no way to suggest that the response was inappropriately inadequate or lacking sympathy. Nothing of the sort. It just seemed that the emotional surge was less than similar events in the past, such as the Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine, and the Branch Davidians. This doesn’t strike me as obviously terrible, but it is different. Our capacity for shock at genuine violence has been re-calibrated. We are far from the incidents in Virginia Tech. But we have been putting emotional distance, in stages, between ourselves and Blacksburg, VA for some time. An incident such as the mass murder in Virginia Tech will always elicit sympathy and a coming-together of what each speaker at the memorial services called “community.” The paid of the individual families closest to such traumatic deaths can never be diminished. Still, we may be passing through a period, as World War II in the Philippines, when Filipinos became hallowed out by repetitive exposures to violence and death--real or manufactured. No one should be surprised if our shell-shocked population is reluctant any time soon to revisit the experience outside the realm of friends and families. But now let’s take a look at what ethnicity has done for America. The Chinese practically built the railroad (not the Asians), the Filipino farmers have done so much for the country’s agriculture from Hawaii to Louisiana to California (not the Asians). Currently, the Chinese immigrants overhauled and made Flushing, New York a model community. The Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese, Pakistanis and Indians moved to Queens and are now revitalizing this section of the most bucolic borough, the Staten Island. Due to the fact that the student gunman was Asian, I was so embarrassed to admit that the gunman could be a Filipino. There was this feeling of uneasiness and anticipation the first time I heard the news. I am sure that some of my Asian friends felt the same. But wait, isn’t America known as the Land of immigrants? And, most of these immigrants are law-abiding citizens, good workers, and some have become prosperous in this country. But we must admit that one or two who committed an infraction, our heritage as a group will not include the total number of our racial group as all bad. Remember the cliche, there is always one bad apple in a basket-full of apples. Those who see this horrific and senseless crime of massacre as an issue of ethnicity is wrong. The response of the university and local police may have been faulty, but our self-security as a nation is what is being called into question...not ethnicity. We all know about defending ourselves from outsiders, but what about defending America from ourselves, and not ethnicity? Though America is as diverse as the world population, there is no monopoly in excellence. There will always be an existence of a bad apple and a possibility of a crackpot. On the other hand, is the ongoing carnage in Iraq slowly disentisizing our emotions to awful, meaningless, and inhumane incidents such as the Virginia Tech shooting?

TITLE: SAVE THEUP CARILLION TOWER

Dear Fellow Alumni, Apart from the Oblation statue, the other cherished landmark in U.P. Diliman is the Carillon Tower It is said that if the Oblation best symbolizes the image of the University, it is the Carillon that provides its voice, in musical terms. The Carillon is a structure which houses 46 musical bells and designed by National Artist Julio F. Nakpil. It was built in 1952 as a gift of the alumni to the University. It was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and the only one in the country using a clavier (wooden keyboard). Where once the Carillon serenaded the Diliman community with its soothing sounds, its music is now no longer heard. Due to wear and tear, neglect, and lack of funding, it has quickly deteriorated over the years and has completely stopped functioning. It now stands lonely, desolate, and quietly calling for help. It is a call that we cannot ignore. It is a call for us to act. As the University of the Philippines prepares to celebrate its Centennial Year in 2008, we would like to see that the Carillon starts to play again, that its music is heard to warm the heart and to lift the spirit once again. For this to come about, it is imperative that we all must join hands to save and restore the Carillon in time for next year 2008 Centennial Celebrations and for all the years to come. That is why the U.P. Alumni Association spearheaded the U.P. Carillon Restoration Project a year and a half ago. Since then, all the necessary studies, preparations, activities, and arrangements have been made, including the daunting task of fund raising. While the response to our efforts has been generally encouraging, the much-needed financial resources have been slow in coming. In other words, we are still short of funds for the restoration. And we are running out of time. Therefore, we would like to call on all U.P. alumni, as well as those who have a sense of national pride and history and who believe in the ideals that the University stands for -- to help save and restore the Carillon. We appeal to you for help in mobilizing resources. We request you to donate and do so generously. We invite you to visit our website by clicking www.upcarillon.org for details on the project and how you can be of help in this worthwhile undertaking. You may, for example, give your donations on-line, fast and securely, through PayPal or by using major credit cards. Thank you and best regards.

Title: Chicago's celeb spring highlights

It was great to be back here in Chi-town after my brief but most awaited homecoming in the Philippines! My trip with my husband RJ and my Mom was really exciting, memorable, and "bee-zy," so to speak. It was memorable as I was able to spend my time being with my relatives back home, commemorated the passion of Christ, and asked for the blessings of our miraculous "Inda", Maria Salome thru our family's annual "Pabasa" (literally, reading), where marathon chantings of the story of Jesus' life, passion and death were done. I also spent the Holy Week, known as "Semana Santa," one of the most important religious festivals of the entire year in the Philippines. I was also able to meet my friends whom I didn't see for a long time and met my husband's relatives in Pampanga for the first time. And, most of all, my grand reunion with my Kiddo Alric. I have missed Chicago though, since tons of exciting "showbiz" activities transpired while I was away. Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, Pokwang and Rica Peralejo had a successful "All For You" concert last April 7, which was a Black Saturday at the Pickwick Theatre. Special thanks to Gerry Rebello for carrying out the interviews on my behalf and so allow me to welcome Gerry back to CPRTV for being the "Chicanoy Chicanay" Host. I'm glad to work with you again. The heirs of the legendary Ray Charles: Kevin L and Sheila Raye Charles performed live in Chicago and launched Kevin's debut album "Souled Out" last April 13. Many thanks to Tito Nongni Joe Mauricio and Tita Nangni Veronica Leighton for covering the event. Coming up in June, is an exceptional performance by Ogie Alcasid and Ai-Ai De Las Alas who will stage a concert at the Pickwick Theatre. Big thanks for the press release written by Vic Perez from Los Angeles. "HEIRS OF THE LEGENDARY RAY CHARLES- KEVIN L AND SHEILA RAYE CHARLES PERFORMED LIVE IN CHICAGO!" R&P (Rhythm & Praise) rapper/ singer Kevin L launched his upcoming "Souled Out" album with a live performance with sister, Sheila Raye Charles, and dinner at Kevin's Restaurant, located at 9 West Hubbard Street, Chicago, IL 60610, last Friday, April 13, 2007 at 7:00pm. Accompanied by a few special celebrity guests, Kevin L kicked off this national tour in the hopes of promoting the message of peace and brotherly love as the only realistic means to get ahead to the youth community. Delivering a message of hope to the thirsty ears of the urban jungle, Kevin L's encouraging lyrics come from the sincerest of places. The product of a long line of musicians and singers, and the stepson of the legendary Ray Charles, Kevin L seems fated to conquer the music industry. His church-going mother was a faithful member of her church choir and ensured that Kevin was well-versed in Christian faith. Conscious of where he has been and how far he still has to travel, Kevin L has launched a multi-faceted campaign to relay his message of peace & brotherly love as a means for advancement. This talented visionary has coupled his musical efforts with the creation of his clothing line, Stranger Gear, and the initiation of The H13 Youth Project, which aims to support and heal communities by going into schools and neighborhoods nationwide to explain the benefits of having a productive and positive community that would open more doors for the youth. "When I look over my life, I see seasons of success as well as struggles" reflects Kevin L. "God has allowed it all as a way to prepare me for my mission. Through pain, you can truly learn what it means to rely on God. Now, if through faith, you let God take the reigns, He will lead you to places beyond your wildest imagination and make miracles happen". Indeed, Kevin L.'s astonishing first work, "Souled Out," is just one of those places. For more information on Kevin L and the H13 Project, please visit www.SoulOutCD.com "DO YOU LOVE TO LAUGH?" BEAUTIFUL YOU
By Beng Plurad-Mayor

TITLE: Falling Hair?

GLORIOUS MOMENTS Then He will answer them, saying, "Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. Matthew 25:45 In speaking to a group of ministers, Fred Carddock noted the importance of being faithful in the little things of life. He said, "To give my life for Christ appears glorious. To pour myself out for others.....to pay the ultimate price of martyrdom--I'll do it. I'm ready, Lord, to go out in a blaze of glory. "We think giving our all to the Lord is like taking a $1,000 bill and laying it on the table---"Here's my life, Lord. I'm giving it all." "But the reality for most of us is that He sends us to the bank and has us cash in the $1,000 for quarters. We go through life putting our 25 cents here and 50 cents there. Listen to the neighbor kid's troubles instead of saying, Get lost! Go to a committee meeting. Give a cup of water to a shaky old man in a nursing home. "Usually giving our life to Christ isn't glorious. It' done in all those little acts of love. 25 cents at a time. It would be easy to go out in a flash of glory, it's harder to live the Christian life little by little over the long haul." Ask the Lord to show you how you can spend your life well, 25 cents at a time. Give your love to those who needs Jesus and you'll find true peace and happiness that's waiting to exhale from your heart. What is the real reason why we are having a lot of falling hair.? Statistics show that eating healthy foods, getting enough rest, exercising, becoming happy most of the time, laughing your heart out, just feeling good, can help trigger all your cells to develop the need for your physical self to improve into becoming healthier. Falling hair could also be hereditary. Also environmental activity has a lot to do with the production of your cells. Part of what we sometimes tend to ignore and we keep on allowing ourselves to become a part of our in and utmost self is "STRESS" and "WORRY." We may probably do not notice the side effect of stress in our lives. Let me tell you, stress is the worst enemy our body loves to create, and unknowingly, it's happening all the time. Why is that? I do not think it's because we lack something. There are a lot of reasons and these negative forces become the worst enemy of our unhealthy bodies. It may sound ridiculous to you, but let me tell you if you try to free yourselves from the burden of stress, you will notice your skin will glow, your hair will stop falling, your attitude will create success, and your life will be much better..And you will be healthier. You probably can tell me, it''s easy to say, true, but hard to do. True again. Let's see if you try to just completely ignore all the factors that's causing you to worry, would you believe me if I tell you that it will be solved by itself?. Say you do not want to release yourself from stress and worry, will it do you good? Not so, yes? Honestly, I had been wanting to write to you about all these things, and, yes, there is a solution to all your problems; in time you'll realize what you worried about after all is really not worth worrying. You must understand that when there's pain, the pain can turn you into a much better individual. It can make you stronger, more successful human being and it's an experience you'll be thankful you have gone thru because that is the only way you will see your true self, victorious. And, once you free yourself from all these negative things, you become a better person, and you can accomplish more than what you would normally think you cannot accomplish. One thing I want you to know, you have been given the power to conquer all kinds of problems in your life, all you have to do is to search for the truth. That is, if you want to be set completely free from "STRESS AND WORRY.” You are a beautiful you. Believe that. I have the solution for you just e-mail me, and I will respond. I want you to stay beautiful and free. Here is my e-mail address, bmayor5406@sbcglobal.net.
